I BEAT WINTER
I will always be true to my Winnipeg roots. The deep freeze of the mid-winter doesn’t much phase me, at least for the jaunt from the house to the car – but there used to be little chance you’d find me frolicking outside in -30 (“feels like minus infinity”). Imagine my surprise when I discovered – I LOVE RUNNING IN THE WINTER. The colder the better. It’s like competing with old man winter, and winning! I get home with icicles on my lashes, a great sweat going, and I actually feel like staying outside for a bit to stretch out my calves! My feet and hands are warm (finally!) with the blood that’s pumping through me, even though my tush might have frostbite.
I have to admit, a very big part of my love of winter running started with my lulu winter running gear. You really do need the right gear to protect you, and when you finally fork out the dough for the good stuff you feel pretty obliged to make use of it. I have tech fleece tights, long sleeve base layers, a puffy glide fabric jacket with perforation in the underarms, and zippers to further ventilate if necessary. Tech fleece neck warmer. Merino wool leg
warmers. This year I bought a pair of New Balance Winter Run shoes too, which make it actually FUN to navigate through slush and snow, even on the worst days.
When it’s this cold you’re guaranteed sunshine, which for me is much preferred to the dreary, rainy weather. Maybe it’s the flatlander in me (I would never survive in Vancouver) but the drifting snow and gusting winds just make me want to seize and conquer.
